One of the Best Quotes Ever

by Mike Guindon on Jan.25, 2010, under General

mozilla project

“The increase in laws that make it difficult to run an open network, especially rules about content.” You suddenly become liable for anything that gets downloaded, whether it’s legal or not,” she said. “If you said to a municipality, if you build a road, you have to guarantee nothing illegal happens on it — that’s what’s happening on the Internet now. So that’s the kind of regulatory disruption that’s going to have some long-term consequences.”

This was said by Mitchell Baker who is the leader of the Mozilla Project at the DLD conference in Munich, Germany. Now only if the Government and some Corporations (who will remain nameless but you know who you are dicks….) would see it the same way. You can read about it here:

Google Bans White Teeth and Weight Loss

by Mike Guindon on Nov.23, 2009, under General

So I came across this post from TheBigMoney and it talks about how Google is changing its strategies and will now be banning the Advertisers that advertise “scammy” products/rebills instead of just pulling the ads themselves. This is actually old news but what was funny is how this person is talking about how bad those types of advertisements are and actually calls out Pulse360 and Adblade, yet at the bottom of their webpage I found this on EVERY SINGLE PAGE THEY HAVE……

bigmoney

I don’t know about you but I find that HILARIOUS and very ironic/hypocritical so I had to point it out. I guess he doesn’t view his post after it gets posted…. Nice.

Dennis Yu….The retard.

by Mike Guindon on Nov.16, 2009, under General

So I’m a regular reader of Shoemoney. A fan as well. Over the past few weeks there has been tons of buzz about Dennis Yu ever since his post up on TechCrunch (read here). Well I guess Shoe must have had enough and decided to write a no-holds-bar post about his experience with the dude. Pretty good stuff and pretty funny. Here’s a snip.

“So whats the story in the end. Well I feel embarrassed. I fell for it. AND I was leveraged to get other people to fall into Dennis’s crap. I have heard people tell me Dennis used my name and told people he did everything from run our ppc campaign, to geeze just about name it. Each time I hear that I’m like damn… I’m sorry…”

http://www.shoemoney.com/2009/11/16/dennis-yu-rise-and-fall-of-a-con-man-in-the-affiliate-industry/

All I can say is he is just flat out retarded. Make your own judgment but that’s mine and I’m sticking to it.

MPAA does more whining…

by Mike Guindon on Nov.04, 2009, under General

Everyone knows of my personal feelings about the MPAA, well Dan Rayburn pretty much sums it up in this post here.

Here’s a snippet:

“All studios ever do is complain. You never hear them sound like they are actually happy with digital technology, because in reality, they aren’t. We keep hearing about how poor they are doing and how the Internet is ruining their business, yet this summer they grossed $4.7 billion in ticket sales, the highest grossing summer ever at the box office. How did that happen if the Internet is suppose to be eating into their business?”

This all just stems back to the same situation everytime. GIVE THE CONSUMER WHAT THEY WANT and that will end all your problems!

Go suck it MPAA!!! And don’t think I forgot about you either RIAA……

FTC laying down the hammer.

Hammering

I’m sure you’re all aware of the new “guidelines” going into effect as of Dec 1st, 2009 (if not go here to read about it). These new guidelines make it incredibly confusing for us internet marketers. WSJ online tries to sum it up and here is an excerpt:

“There are also practical objections. For example, if you get a free copy of a book and then post a comment about it on Twitter, how many of the permitted 140 characters must be dedicated to the disclosure? Do employees of a company have to disclose the fact of their employment every time they comment on its products through their personal Facebook accounts?”

Read the full article here: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704500604574480942272744448.html

Shoemoney also has a good post up about the subject here: http://www.shoemoney.com/2009/10/08/what-you-dont-know-about-the-new-ftc-rules-on-disclosure

I personally find it confusing and retarded! I can understand their need to try to weed out all the fake advertising going on but I think they’re going a little to far with this one and I hope they take it back a few notches or at least put CLEAR and UNDERSTANDABLE rules in place and not the “vague” rules that are about to go into effect.

Alice Taylors take on Copyright

by Mike Guindon on Oct.20, 2009, under General

Elizabeth Stark (US)
Creative Commons License photo credit: mediateletipos

A great copyright article summed up:

““Piracy” – as done by teenagers, all my friends, pretty much everyone I know, is simply demand where appropriate supply does not exist. Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies – in other words, anti-copying, anti-fair use – are also anti-accessibility. They attempt to block and restrict, and they fail every time. Every single time. To be accessible, work needs to be available, always and to everyone. No delineations, no restrictions: it’s too messy. Too expensive. Too dull.”

Torrent freak reports on the RIAA’s claim…. Heres an exerp:

“Jonathan Lamy, chief spokesperson for the RIAA declared DRM dead, when he was asked about the RIAA’s view on DRM for an upcoming SCMagazine article. “DRM is dead, isn’t it?” Lamy said, referring to the DRM-less iTunes store and other online outfits that now offer music without restrictions.”
